Grow Your Own Ginger and Sweet Potato Plant DIY

I {Karisse} have a thing for gardens. I just LOVE them. Most {ok, all} of my gardening experience has been container gardening. It's been "I want to have full sun plants, but all I have is shade." But guess what, now I have a spot with PARTIAL sun. Living the dream. Living the dream. Here are a few shots of my new Florida garden. {Since Didda and I dubbed our house: Pemberly Manor I've dubbed my garden: Pemberly Garden.}

Isn't it super cute? Not pictured I also have basil and cilantro plants, a desert plant (the name of which I've forgotten) and a potted key lime tree. Through my years of gardening I've found that I'm good at succulents, most herbs and other plants that don't produce food. If it produces food, well, I kill it. I want to change that, but I'm gonna have to wait until I live in a place with full sun!

On to the DIY!

I've become obsessed with the idea of trying to grow ginger and a sweet potato plant {I love the leaves on this one!} Let's start with the ginger! I bought a small piece of ginger at the grocery store and soaked it in water for about 35 hours. {You really only need to do it overnight, but I wanted to be SURE I'd gotten off all the "don't grow" chemicals they spray on grocery store ginger to keep it from sprouting.}
 Then I got some potting mix that drains well, and two small containers to start the ginger. Ginger grows horizontally and not vertically, so I will need to replant these pretty soon. I just didn't have anything on hand and I wanted to START IT NOW. It's how I roll!

I filled the two containers with dirt {I didn't pack it down}, and then I cut the small piece of ginger in half. I placed the pieces on top of the dirt and then put a thin layer of dirt on top. {Not pictured} I'm keeping it in a spot in my house that doesn't receive direct sunlight and keeping the dirt moist. {Sorry, I hate that word too.}
    As for the sweet potato, there were a lot of ways to get it started. I just wasn't "feeling" the "put toothpicks on it and suspend it in water for weeks" way of getting roots. It just didn't feel like a good time to me. I only found one example of starting sweet potatoes in dirt. In this example they cut the sweet potato in half lengthwise and rested it in peat moss. I, of course, didn't feel like running out and buy peat moss. I wanted to plant it NOW. So, I used the same dirt I used for the ginger. #winning
After this picture was taken, I covered the sweet potato in dirt, watered it and put it in a plastic bag next to the ginger. The goal is to keep all three pots "M-word" but not drenched. This should help them root and grow. I will keep you posted and let you know if this worked or not!!

Welcome to Pemberly Manor!

Gleaming Floors was beautiful and wonderful. It was GREAT for that season!
But guess where we live now?  A little condo in the heart of Florida that we have dubbed:
Pemberly Manor
 {Our first piece of mail to Pemberly Manor}

We love the calmer {and warmer} way of life in our hometown! We are still mixing our two completely different styles of decoration. Karisse is "More is MORE!" and Kristel is a minimalist!
The first compromise was this simple design above the couch. It's FULL of Europe and simplicity. In fact, our entire living room area is Europe themed. We kinda can't get enough. And we kinda wanna go back RIGHT NOW.

 {Karisse got these postcards in Italy and refurbished frames for them when she got home!}
 {A Kitchen Corner! Utensil holder painted by Karisse and a water bottle from Italy.}
{The BEST orange juice on the planet.}

Pemberly Manor is still a work in progress. We will keep you updated on the little details as they are ready. But, we love it. :)

And THEN We Just Up and Moved to Florida!

You may have noticed that we moved.
As kids, we grew up in Florida where things look like this:

 After FL we both lived in Los Angeles and then on to DC. It's cold in DC. We don't like cold. So, in September we started thinking about moving back to our home state.
As we did our research, we discovered that the cost of living in Florida was half that of DC. And then we were offered a great deal to rent a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom condo. It was now cold in DC and being one who has never adjusted to cold weather, I was dreaming of Florida. So was Kristel. Some people dream of a White Christmas, but we were dreaming of a fake-snow one, like this:
So, we decided:
 Why wait until January? Let’s move in two weeks.
So, we did. In November of last year {yes, a mere few months ago} we said good-bye to D.C.
We said good-bye to Gleaming Floors.
We packed up everything we owned in a U-haul and towed Kristel's car while she drove mine!

We moved back to our home state. Where it’s warm. Where a cold winter day still gets you into the 60’s and 70’s during the day. Where there is no threat of snow and the rainstorms last only 20 minutes before the sun comes back out. Where the beach breeze blows through your hair and the spirit is calm and relaxed.

Yes, welcome home to Florida.

{P.S. Stay tuned for a blog about our NEW home: Pemberly Manor.}

A Happy New Year: A Seasons Giving Blog Hop and Giveaway

Welcome, Seasons Giving Blog Hoppers!
We're glad you're here, and no, we can't believe it's 2016 either. What. The. Heck! We are two artsy sisters who have our own business. Here we are in sketch form. {and yes, we're super cute!}
{Kristel and Karisse}
Here are some of our favorite creations from this last year:

Since there are two of us, Kristel wrote you a welcome, and some thoughts on the New Year. I, {Karisse} will handle the giveaway at the bottom of this post! Enjoy, and be inspired by what Kristel wrote. I was.
It's a new year. Is it possible to change? Jamie from "To Write Love On Her Arms" says it best:

I believe that change is possible, but I tend to be impatient and impetuous and try to change everything at once. I would start each new year with lots of resolutions and eventually resolute to quit all of them. In a book I read recently, one of the characters said that instead of trying to change everything, what if we added one new good thing? What if you started slowly and added one new thing. Then, after a while, add a second good thing and watch the good things pile up. Before you know it, you've caused some positive changes in your life.

So this year, I'm testing this theory. My resolution is to be kind....wait for myself. I got this idea while watching the newest rendition of Cinderella. Her motto is, "Have courage and be kind." I think it really is true that you can't really love other people to your full capacity until you love yourself. So I'm starting simple and adding one new good thing to my life. I'm going to make it a daily practice to let go of the negativity that people throw at me and forgive myself for my mistakes. What one good thing would you add?

And now, for what we are giving away!
To keep in theme with this post, and the idea of being kind to ourselves in 2016, we are giving away one of our favorite new paintings:
This was painted FREEHAND on a 12x12 canvas!
